Yew Wah Infant and Toddler Discovery Centre

Early childhood education is  the foundation of success  for Yew Chung and Yew Wah. In 2019, under Dr Chan Po-king’s leadership, Yew Chung and Yew Wah took another big step forward with the launch of the Yew Wah Infant and Toddler Discovery Centre (YWITDC), which is the first state-of-the-art infant and toddler centre for 0 to 3 year-old children in mainland China

YWITDC follows the fundamental learning and teaching values of Yew Chung and Yew Wah, offering infants and toddlers a learning space equipped to support their early developmental needs, marking its difference from traditional daycare centres in China.

At the same time, YWITDC is a community for parents/caregivers to explore and learn about leading approaches in interacting with children aged 0-3, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to respond to their children’s needs.

Please allow us to guide you through YWITDC’s philosophy, teachers, programmes, and admission information.

A Child-Centered Approach

 1. We strongly believe parental engagement is extremely important throughout a child’s development.

Parents are the key stakeholders in our programmes. It is through parents’ presence and response in play that a child learns how to build trust and constructive relationships, and is supported in engaging in deeper learning.

Meanwhile, we also offer caregiver training programmes for parents, grandparents and domestic helpers to help them better understand how a child develops and grows.

 2. We believe by forming positive relationships, infants and toddlers are able to get the emotional security they need to explore and learn.

By respecting and caring for each child, our professional Western and Chinese teachers can help our learners build positive relationships with those around them.

Teachers would also support and encourage independent learning of each child by observing, reflecting and responding to their needs.

 3. We believe high quality learning occurs when a child plays, at the same time placing importance on the child’s learning environment.

In order for every child to develop holistically through independent play, we design a learning and playing space suitable for infants and toddlers.

 4. We strongly believe that every child is a unique and capable learner.

By observing and reflecting on learners’ behaviours, we design learning and teaching plans that are responsive to their growth through developmental assessment.

Teaching Staff

Ms Yi Fan

Director, Yew Wah Infant & Toddler Discovery Centre

Over 20 years of teaching experience in New Zealand

Curriculum specialist and lecturer in Infant and Toddler Parent Programmes

Hi everyone, my name is Fan Yi. I graduated from East China Normal University.
I relocated to New Zealand in 1995 and have been a teacher, manager, and business partner in various early childhood centres in Auckland for over 20 years. In 2016, I began offering a series of parental programmes on infant and toddler education.
This April, I left the centre that I had worked for 16 years and accepted Dr Chan’s invitation to join Yew Wah in Shanghai to lead 0-3 year-old programmes for infants and toddlers and their parents.
I look forward to working with my team at YWITDC, providing an enriching learning centre for children and parents to develop happily and healthily.

Ms Lihong Yu

Co-Teacher at Yew Wah Infant & Toddler Discovery Centre

Former Master Early Childhood Education Teacher at the Yew Chung International School of Shanghai

My name is Lihong Yu. I have 27 years of teaching experience in early childhood education. I worked at the ECE section of Yew Chung International School of Shanghai for 20 years, as a classroom teacher and team leader, with master teacher status, teaching children from the age of 2 to Year 1 in Primary.
Throughout my service, I have felt strongly that each child is unique, and each must grow and explore at their own pace.

It is challenging, yet rewarding for me to work at Yew Wah Infant & Toddler Discovery Centre. Along with my colleagues, I will seek to build an environment for children to learn through play, and share my knowledge and experience with parents, together exploring the wonders of play with children.

Ms Rachel Blylevens (New Zealand)

Co-Teacher at Yew Wah Infant & Toddler Discovery Centre

Former Early Childhood Education Teacher at the Yew Chung International School of Shanghai

Hi, my name is Rachel. I am an international early childhood education teacher from New Zealand, with 21 years of experience in teaching and co-ordinating in the field.
My teaching philosophy is based on a holistic, pedagogical approach to children’s learning and development.
I consider high quality education and care is critical during this fundamental period in a child’s development. I further believe all children from birth are inherently competent and capable individuals who learn and develop best when their culture, community and social connections are valued and respected. I look forward to learning alongside your child and family.
I have three daughters. My youngest child is now studying at the Yew Chung International School of Shanghai. Before joining the Yew Wah Infant & Toddler Discovery Centre, I was a teacher at the ECE section of YCIS Shanghai.
